Service overview
What domestic ev charger installation actually involves.
What it is, A domestic EV charger install replaces ad-hoc 3-pin charging with a dedicated 7kW (32A) wall-mounted unit on its own circuit, RCD-protected and load-balanced against your existing consumer unit.
Who it's for, Homeowners, landlords supplying EV-ready rental properties, and small fleet drivers who need reliable overnight charging at home rather than queuing at public chargers in Blackpool or Preston.
When you need it, Before your new EV arrives, when an existing untethered cable is showing wear, or when your supplier upgrades your meter to a smart half-hourly tariff and you want to take advantage of off-peak rates.
Why it matters, A compliant install protects your warranty, your home insurance and your DNO registration, and avoids the genuine fire risk of repeated high-current draw through unrated socket circuits.
What happens if you delay
The cost of putting it off.
Common, concrete consequences we see across the Fylde Coast every month, not scare tactics, just what's documented.
- 1
Charging through a standard 13A socket draws near-maximum current for 8+ hours overnight, sockets and back-boxes routinely overheat, melt and ignite.
- 2
Uncertified installs invalidate your home insurance and your vehicle manufacturer's battery warranty.
- 3
Without DNO notification the local network operator can disconnect your supply on inspection.
- 4
Missing load balancing trips the main fuse when the oven, shower and car all draw at once, expensive emergency call-outs on a Sunday.
- 5
Cheap untethered cables degrade in the salt air on the Fylde Coast within 18 months without proper IP-rated termination.
Our process
A five-step system, no surprises.
Step 1
On-site inspection
We attend the property, photograph the existing installation and confirm the scope in person, never quoting blind from a phone call.
Step 2
Written diagnosis & fixed quote
You receive a clear breakdown by email: what we'll do, the parts used, the certificate issued, and a fixed price with no day-rate surprises.
Step 3
Scheduled installation
Booked into a confirmed slot with a named lead electrician. We turn up on time, in branded vans, with the materials on board.
Step 4
Testing & certification
Every install is tested under BS 7671 and signed off with the relevant NICEIC / Part P certificate uploaded to your portal.
Step 5
Aftercare & 12-month guarantee
12 months on workmanship plus manufacturer warranties on parts. One phone number, Alex or Jack, for anything that needs revisiting.
Benefits
What you actually get.
Full charge overnight
A 7kW unit adds ~30 miles per hour, typical commuters wake up to 100% every morning on off-peak rates as low as 7p/kWh.
Smart-tariff ready
Every unit we fit is app-controlled and scheduling-ready for Octopus Go, Intelligent and equivalent off-peak tariffs.
Safe for your home
Dedicated 32A circuit, Type A + DC leakage RCD, surge protection, your sockets and wiring stay within their rating.
Insurance & warranty intact
OZEV-approved hardware plus a Part P-notified install keeps your home insurance and vehicle battery warranty valid.
Future-proof for solar
We pre-wire and configure for solar diversion so when you add PV you can charge from sunlight without re-running cable.
Tidy, weather-rated finish
IP54+ rated units, fully grommeted cable runs, no surface clips on the front of your house.
Specification & method
How we deliver, in detail.
We install OZEV-approved tethered and untethered 7kW (32A) chargers on dedicated radial circuits from your consumer unit, with a Type A RCD + 6mA DC leakage device, surge protection and DNO notification handled in-house.
Materials & equipment
- Ohme ePod, Hypervolt 3, Zappi 2.1 and Easee One, the units we install most often for Fylde Coast homes
- 6mm² T&E, SWA or LSF cable depending on the run, bonded, glanded and grommeted to manufacturer spec
- Henley blocks for tails-side connections so we never break your existing meter seal
- DIN-rail SPD and Type A + 6mA DC RCBO in a dedicated enclosure where the consumer unit is full
Method & standards
- Earthing strategy assessed first, PEN-fault protection is built into modern units so we rarely need an earth rod, but we test and confirm before quoting
- Cable runs planned to minimise external clipping; loft, void and sub-floor routes used wherever access allows
- Load study against your main fuse rating to decide between fixed 32A install, current-clamp load balancing or DNO upgrade
- Commissioning includes a polarity test, earth-loop impedance reading and a live 7kW charge cycle before we leave
Variations of this service
- Tethered units (cable attached), best for single-driver homes, no fumbling with cables in the rain
- Untethered (socket only), best for shared driveways and households with mixed cable types
- Solar-diverting units (Zappi, Hypervolt with sensor), only charge from surplus PV when configured to ECO modes
- Three-phase 22kW for properties already on a three-phase supply (rare in domestic, common in Lytham coach houses and converted commercial)
Where it applies on the Fylde Coast
- Driveway or garage with consumer unit within 15m, standard install, typically half a day
- On-street parking with off-road bay, we'll advise on cable management and council pavement crossings
- Listed buildings around Lytham, Garstang and Poulton, surface-mounted in conservation-friendly finishes
- Holiday lets in St Annes and Cleveleys, landlord-managed Wi-Fi and per-user billing through the unit's app
Residential vs commercial
Residential installs are single-phase 32A on a dedicated circuit with the homeowner's tariff. Commercial workplace charging steps up to load-managed three-phase clusters, OCPP back-office billing and a separate sub-board, covered on our commercial EV charger page.

Our standard tethered 7kW install starts from £895 inc VAT for a sub-15m cable run from the consumer unit to a garage or driveway wall. Longer runs, consumer-unit upgrades or DNO supply changes are quoted in writing after the survey, never bolted on at the end.
